1st Cub Scout: Another year is starting, we would like to welcome you, and tell you what our purpose is, and what we hope to do.
2nd Cub Scout: The Cub Scouts is a group of boys: it helps us grow up strong, it teaches us to do what's right, and fight against what's wrong.
3rd Cub Scout: We'll go on hikes and field trips, to learn of nature's wonders: so we'll respect her when we're grown, and not make any blunders.
4th Cub Scout: We'll be shown in many ways that each man is our brother, and we'll see what joy there is in helping one another.
5th Cub Scout: We'll learn to be good citizens and, hopefully we'll see, that laws are made for all men, so each man can be free.
6th Cub Scout: To do this, the Cub Scouts need good leaders - that is true! That means we need the help of you, and you, and you !!! Please join us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The stage is set with a large kettle and campfire. Inside the kettle and against one side is a folded flag out of sight of the audience.
1st Scout: Tonight we are going to fix a special treat for you that's really grand and
make for you a recipe --
the Grandest in the Land!
2nd Scout: First we will put in a cup of red for courage true.
(Pour a cup of red confetti into the pot)
3rd Scout: For loyalty we will add a dash of heavenly blue.
(Pour a cup of blue confetti into the pot)
4th Scout: For purity we will sift in a layer of snowy white.
(Pour in a cup of white Confetti)
5th Scout: We will sprinkle a pinch of stars to make it come out right.
(Pour in a cup of silver stars)
6th Scout : We will stir and stir and you will see that what we've made is Old Glory.
(Reach in and pull out the flag, two Scouts unfold and hold the Flag)
7th Scout: Our flag is the most beautiful in the world, let's always be loyal to it.
Please stand and give the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
In this ceremony, four Scouts take part. Room is in complete darkness. Spotlight is on the flag with color guards on one side of the room. Three colored candles red, white and blue are on the table.
Scout 1 (Lights red candle) The red of my flag is the lifeblood of brave men, ready to die or worthily live, for this, our country.
Scout 2 (Lights white candle) The white of my flag is for purity, cleanness of purpose, thought, word and deed.
Scout 3 (Lights blue candle) The blue of my flag is for truth and justice, like the eternal blue of star filled heavens.
Scout 4 (ALL SALUTE) My flag - the flag of America, home of liberty, land of opportunity, where men of all races and creeds live in friendship and peace together.
SCOUTMASTER: TWO! Lights!
I was born June 14, 1777
I am more than just cloth shaped into a design.
I am the refuge of the world's oppressed people.
I am the silent sentinel of Freedom.
I am the emblem of the greatest sovereign nation on earth.
I am the inspiration for which American patriots gave their lives and fortunes.
I have led your sons into battle from Valley Forge to the jungles of Vietnam.
I walk in silence with each of your Honored Dead to their final resting place beneath
silent white crosses, row upon row.
I have flown through peace and war, strife and prosperity, and amidst it all I have been
respected.
My red stripes symbolize the blood spilled in defense of this glorious Nation.
My white stripes signify the burning tears shed by Americans who lost their sons...
My blue field is indicative of God's heaven, under which I fly.
My stars, clustered together, unify 50 states as one, for God and Country. "Old
Glory" is my nickname, and proudly I wave on high.
Honor me, respect me, defend me with your lives and fortunes. Never let my enemies tear
me down from my lofty position, lest I never return. Keep alight the fires of patriotism:
strive earnestly for the spirit of democracy. Worship Eternal God, and keep His
Commandments: and I shall remain the bulwark of peace and freedom for all mankind.
I AM YOUR FLAG. - written by Marine Master Sergeant Percy Webb for a flag booklet
distributed in 1933.
Equipment: A single twig and a bundle of twigs; American Flag
Begin by posting the colors at the head of the group and follow with this statement:
"Scouters, I hold in my hand several twigs. You can see that one twig alone is easy
to break (demonstrate by breaking a single twig in two), but when I put several twigs
together, they are almost impossible to break (make an unsuccessful effort to break the
bundle of twigs). There is strength in numbers. As a nation of people working together to
preserve our freedom and heritage, we can keep our country strong.
Will you join me in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag ?
Equipment: Table, small candle, match
Cubmaster: Now, fellows, let's all gather around the table. I'm Going to turn out all the lights. (Extinguish lights) I want you to think about the darkness. Now, I'm going to light this small candle (light candle). This one tiny flame makes the room seem quite cheerful again. That's just the way it can be with a Cub Scout. He isn't very big but he can light up his home and make the people around him a little more happy if he keeps the Cub Scouting spirit alive. DO YOUR BEST!
Cub Scouts: We'll do our best!!!
Set up: U.S. Flag is held by Webelos honor guard. Cubmaster has scraps of red, white and blue cloth
Cubmaster: Cub Scouts, what is our flag? You could say it is just a few pieces of red, white and blue cloth like these in my hand. That would be true. But our flag is really much more than that. We all recognize the flag as the banner of our country. In other words, it stands for our country. We should respect it and treat it as we would want to be treated-- with care and love. Let us show our respect by pledging allegiance to the flag. After the pledge, honor guard posts the colors.
I am your flag. I have a special meaning to the Boy Scouts of America because when you make your Cub Scout Promise you speak of your duty to God and country.
I am the symbol of America. I am the great cornfields in the Midwest: throbbing industries in great cities: orchards and vineyards in the great valleys of the West. I am mountains, rivers, and lakes.
I am the keeper of democracy and freedom in a world where both are threatened.
I am the opportunity for any boy to go as far as his skill and his will can carry him. I am many things to everyone and everything to many. As a matter of fact, I guess what I really am is people, People like you.
Cubmaster: Let us all rededicate ourselves to our country. Please rise and say the Pledge of Allegiance.
DO YOUR BEST: When you give the Cub Scout Promise, the words "Do Your Best" often are lost among all the other very important words. Let's stop for a minute and carefully consider these words. "Best" describes effort and action above our usual performance. You are the only person who can possibly know whether or not you have done your best. Every time you repeat the promise, you agree to do your best to do certain things. Your best is just that - the very best. Think about the meaning of the promise and decide that you will always do your very best, no matter what the job facing you might be.
A smile costs nothing, but creates much. It happens in flash, but the memory sometimes lasts forever. It cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen, but it is something that is of no earthly good to anyone unless it is given away. So, if in your hurry and rush you meet someone who is too weary to give you a smile, leave one of yours. No one needs a smile quite as much as a person who has none left to give. What better way to spread good will.
"And now may the great Master of all Scouts be with us till we meet again."
Tonight, we have done many things. We have honored boys and their parents who have advanced in the Cub Scouting program. We have had our serious moments, and we have had a lot of fun. If we were to count all the little things, we would have hundreds of things to be thankful for. One of the most important things each of us has to be thankful for is that we all live in the United States of America. Will you please join me in singing "This Land is Your Land"
The words "Aim for the Stars" has an important meaning to Cub Scouts. Think of Thomas Edison who tried and failed hundreds of times before he perfected the electric light bulb. He never quit trying. A Cub Scout who tries to do his best and keeps trying, is preparing himself for greater responsibilities when he becomes a man. What you do and how well you do it becomes your launching pad to "aim for the stars."
It's a grand ole flag, it's a high flying flag, and forever in peace may it wave...It's the emblem of the land I love, the home of the free and the brave...Every heart beats true for the red, white and blue, be there never a boast or brag. Should old acquaintance be forgot keep your eye on the grand ole flag.
